Never Touch the Dinosaurs | Board Book Review

Never Touch the Dinosaurs is one of the first books Baby Guy showed interest in that wasn't black and white.  We were at my in-laws, and they had this book in a basket.  I started reading it to him, and he was reaching out to touch the dinosaurs!  He was just over two months old, so I was surprised.

Synopsis

The counting sensory book is school themed.  The subtraction concept makes it similar to Never Touch the Grumpy Pumpkins.

Likes

  • The different textures of each dinosaur help with engagement over time.
  • The context at school is fun!  As a teacher, I like school being presented as a good place to learn with friends.
  • Rhyming story telling is great!  A preschool teacher I worked with a few years ago mentioned that with more kids books that don't rhyme, her students came to school finding it more difficult than in previous years.
  • As a parent, it's a fun book to read over and over and over and over!

Dislikes

  • Part of the reason some of the dinosaurs leave the group is because of a failure or because something is hard.  I prefer storylines about persistence, asking for help, and viewing failure as a learning opportunity.  I typically just add a line along those lines as we talk about the pictures on the page.

Baby Guy Approval

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

On a scale of 0 to 5 Baby Guy claps, this would have to be 5 Baby Guy Claps!  The back page is starting to peel away from the back cover, and the dinosaurs are much wigglier then when we got the book.  He'll sit and look through the book on his own for minutes at a time.  He turns individual pages most of the time, and it's funny to see him flip back and forth between pages to see which dinosaur is missing from the new page.  His favorite texture pattern changes every few weeks, which is cute to see him be invested in one dinosaur like it's the most fascinating thing he has ever seen.  The last few weeks, he has started pointing to more of the pictures and not just the textured dinosaurs.  It's cool to see him pointing and engaging with more of the images.
